August Feature Project – Big Challenge? Bring it on.

août 17, 2016

When you hear the word “fireplace”, it’s difficult not to think of stone. From the very first fireplace, stone has served a very functional purpose, primarily that of containing fire in relative safety. Stone continues today in that useful, time-honoured tradition but has also transcended far beyond pure function into the realm of design and aesthetics.

Our feature project this month is a superb case in point. At first glance it is easy to imagine the impulse of conception, initiated with a challenge like “If you’re going to build a fireplace, build a fireplace.” This challenge was clearly taken up and admirably met.

The sheer scale and central location of this fireplace/chimney combination cannot help but make it the focus of this beautiful room. The selection of Fusion Stone Great Lakes stone veneer in the Brindle colour practically guaranteed a ‘mission accomplished’ outcome. The rugged profile of this stone and the irregular colour variation throughout not only exude a powerful, traditional bearing but make for an interior designer’s fantasy come true.

With Fusion Stone as inspiration you can see how furnishings and accessories were selected to complement this bold, central feature. From the slate grey of the mantle, black of the fireplace itself and greys and oranges of the art hung on the chimney to the chocolate brown of the bookcases and ceiling moulding, everything plays off of the Fusion Stone Great Lakes Brindle palette. Lighter, solid and patterned tones found in the walls, furniture fabric, rug, ceiling fan and bookshelf accessories provide a perfect, in sync balance.

For all important contrast, splashes of orange and red have been introduced as pillows, ottoman, table covers, wall art, floor lamp and assorted bookshelf items. It’s easy to imagine how an active fire in the hearth, reflecting off the hardwood flooring, would contribute the final and perfect touch to this scene.

The big news is that Fusion Stone is economical and easy to install, making a fireplace like this one a great DIY project.  And don’t forget, Fusion Stone is available in two distinct profiles and comes in multiple colours. It is also maintenance-free, guaranteed for life, and available at over 1,500 building supply retailers across Canada.

Watch for our next feature project in September.
