What could be more expressive of nature than stone and wood? These two materials are available in huge abundance in many parts of the world and have been used as building materials for millennia. Despite this long-standing use and familiarity, they retain their hard-to-beat functionality and popularity, especially when used in combination.

Our feature project this month is a classic example of how the natural appeal of stone and wood has once again been merged to produce a visually arresting and functionally effective outdoor kitchen.

 

The focus of this project has got to be the canopy and its solid wood support system. There are two interesting design elements in evidence here. One is the decision to use central columns rather than perimeter supports. This provides for visual interest and unrestricted access to two of the three cooking areas. The second feature of note is the incorporation of an unsupported overhang on one end. This provides both protection for the smoker as well as 360° access.

Fusion Stone Great Lakes Raven has been used to face the counter areas throughout. This thin stone veneer contributes a dramatic visual element to the wooden components while supporting the stone and wood design theme. The Raven colour is a striking contrast to the three access doors as well as the matching wood features of this design.

Stone flooring completes this picture, together with stone counter and tabletops. Overall, this is as rustic and outdoorsy as it gets for a modern and clearly serious exterior cooking facility. It just shouts good food and good times.
