When Should You DIY and When Should You Hire a Pro?

août 22, 2017

Doing a home renovation project yourself can save you a lot of money in terms of materials and also the labour costs associated with hiring a contractor. However, getting into a DIY project that you can’t complete, or can’t complete safely or well can end up costing you more in the long run.

According to CNBC, “The most common mistake that new homeowners make is that they try to do home improvements when they should really consult with someone.” So, how do you know what projects are out of your realm and which ones you can take on safely? The answer really depends on these four things:

1. Do you have the knowledge, skills, equipment and tools?

You can go to your building supply store and attend a DIY class, but if you don’t have the equipment or tools available at home then it may not be worth tackling the project yourself. Alternatively, even if you have the tools, but don’t have the know-how, then you may want to forgo the project.

However, if you have the tools, and are willing to take the time to learn the skills, then you can find the knowledge on how to complete most DIY projects from start to finish in DIY videos (Fusion Stone has some great ones), on YouTube, through community college classes, or from friends and neighbours with experience.

2. Do you enjoy DIY projects?

There’s a certain type of person who loves the challenge of a DIY project and the thrill of completing something themselves. On the other hand, DIY projects are not for everyone. If you’re pressed for time, easily frustrated, or just don’t like tactile projects that require you to work with your hands, then it may be better to hire someone else to take on the project for you.

3. Is it worth your time?

On occasion for a DIY project the math just doesn’t add up. Is it really more affordable to

DIY when you consider:

  • The cost of materials?
  • The cost of your time (do you have to take time off work to finish the project)?
  • How long it will take to complete (if it would take a pro a few hours but take you several days it might not be worth it)?
  • Are there other things you would rather be doing?

However, if hiring a pro to do the project is simply outside of the scope of your budget and you feel comfortable taking it on yourself, then it may just make sense to go for it.

4. Is it Dangerous?

There are some home projects that are too dangerous to do unless you’re a certified professional. These include electrical, gas, propane, and major plumbing projects. These types of projects should only be done by a certified professional.
