When you hear the word “fireplace”, it’s difficult not to think of stone. From the very first fireplace, stone has served a very functional purpose, primarily that of containing fire in relative safety. Stone continues today in that useful, time-honoured tradition but has also transcended far beyond pure function into the realm of design and aesthetics.

Our feature project this month is a superb case in point. At first glance it is easy to imagine the impulse of conception, initiated with a challenge like “If you’re going to build a fireplace, build a fireplace.” This challenge was clearly taken up and admirably met.

The sheer scale and central location of this fireplace/chimney combination cannot help but make it the focus of this beautiful room. The rugged profile of this stone and the irregular colour variation throughout not only exude a powerful, traditional bearing but make for an interior designer’s fantasy come true.
